WSPH International Course Development

Faculty-Led International Course Proposal

The Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (WSPH) is committed to expanding global learning opportunities. Faculty-led international courses provide students an accessible way to gain international and intercultural experience. Faculty interested in developing or leading an international course are invited to submit a proposal through our structured approval process.

*Key Deadlines: Curriculum Committee and WSPH Study Abroad Committee approval by September 1st of the preceding year, and for fall and winter courses approval must be completed by February 1 of the same year.     

Proposal Overview

To ensure academic quality, safety, and alignment with Tulane policies, proposals undergo review by the department chair, Curriculum Committee, WSPH Study Abroad Committee, and other key stakeholders. Faculty proposing new or recurring courses must complete a formal application process, typically 9 months prior to the proposed start date.

1. Submit a Course Concept Proposal

  • Department Chair Approval required
  • Must be one-page and include a course description, objectives, locations, dates, participants, preliminary budget, and departmental alignment.
  • Serves as a pre-application
  • Not required for previously approved courses.

2. Curriculum Committee Approval

Submit your new course for academic review via the Course Admin Portal.

Not required for previously approved courses.

3. High-Risk Travel Approval (if applicable)

If your destination is Level 3 or 4 per U.S. Department of State/CDC, or included in Tulane Global's list of high-risk destinations:

  • Submit a High-Risk International Travel Form through Tulane Global
  • Approval may be obtained while other steps proceed.

4. Submit Full Proposal

Submit the complete proposal (using the templates in Box) to officeglobalhealth@tulane.edu.

Required materials:

  • Course syllabus
  • Daily itinerary
  • Course budget
  • Approved transportation providers
  • Emergency contacts
  • High-risk approval documentation (if applicable)

5. WSPH Study Abroad Committee Approval

Approved proposals are signed by the department chair and committee. The committee reviews:

  • Academic quality
  • Financial planning
  • Student reach
  • Program design

6. Budget Approval

Following committee approval, the Assistant Dean of Finance reviews the detailed budget using the budget template in Box.


7. Course Scheduling

Submit details to the Dean of Academic Affairs:

  • Course fees

  • Enrollment limits

  • Dates and refund policy

  • Registration preferences

  • Student eligibility

This ensures the course is added to Gibson before registration opens.

Note: Incomplete proposals will not be reviewed. Priority is given to recurring programs led by the same faculty for consistency in teaching and logistics.
