OGH Research Competition 2020

9/16/2020

Are you a Tulane University STUDENT OR TRAINEE interested in global health? If so, you should know that the Consortium of Universities of Global Health (CUGH) 12th Annual Conference will be held on March 12-14, 2021 and Tulane is one of the host institutions!

Do you have global health related research data to present? If so, you should submit an abstract for the TULANE UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF GLOBAL HEALTH-CUGH RESEARCH COMPETITION!

Tulane Office of Global Health (OGH) is a university-wide resource intended to promote global health activities. Tulane OGH is inviting students interested in presenting their global health research at CUGH to submit an abstract to this research competition. Abstracts will be reviewed by the OGH Steering Committee with the goal of sponsoring the CUGH registration fees for top scoring student presenters from each school within Tulane University (for the SPHTM, submissions by undergraduate public health students and graduate students will be reviewed as 2 distinct school groups).

Here are some key facts about CUGH and the Tulane OGH-sponsored competition.

There are 7 topical focus, interdisciplinary areas for the CUGH conference. Abstracts must fit into one of these topics. These are:

  • Addressing the Social Determinants of Health
  • Covid-19, Emerging Infectious Diseases, & Other Communicable Diseases
  • Politics, Law, Corruption, Human Rights, Governance, Diplomacy, Strengthening Public Institutions
  • Planetary Health, One Health, Environmental Health, Climate Change and Pollution
  • Strengthening Health Systems, Public Health, Primary and Surgical Care
  • Non-Communicable Diseases
  • Translation and Implementation Science, High Impact Development Initiatives, Bridging Research to Policy, Reforming Academia

What are the benefits of presenting a poster at CUGH 2021?

Students presenting at CUGH will have an opportunity to interact with global health faculty and trainees from around the world. A CUGH presentation is a notable accomplishment to list on your CV. In addition, The Lancet Global Health (a premier global health journal) and CUGH will award seven $500 awards to seven student poster presentations - one for the best of each track. Students who wish to compete must opt in on the abstract submission form to compete. The scoring criteria for this CUGH abstract competition are described here.

Who can apply for the Tulane OGH Research Competition?

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all schools within Tulane University. Medical residents may participate as medical school contestants.

If I submit an abstract am I obligated to pay for CUGH 2021 registration?

Submitting presenters will be notified about whether or not their abstract was accepted by CUGH during the month of December. Presenters whose abstracts are accepted must register for the conference and pay $170.00 to have their abstracts included in the program. Tulane OGH Research Competition winners from each school within Tulane University will have their CUGH conference registration fee paid for them.

How do I participate in the CUGH 2021 Annual Conference if my abstract is not accepted or if I don’t submit an abstract?

In order to attend and view in the virtual oral and poster presentation sessions, you must register as a participant at https://www.cugh2021.org/. The cost of registration is $170.00 for Tulane students, a reduced fee because Tulane University is a member of CUGH.

What if more than one student is an author on the submitted abstract?

If more than one Tulane student is an author of a winning abstract, Tulane will cover the full registration fee for the presenting author and half of the registration fee for up to two additional student authors.

How do I enter the Tulane OGH Research Competition?

You must first submit an abstract to CUGH at https://www.cugh2021.org/abstract-submissions on or before the October 23 deadline to have your abstract considered for the Tulane OGH Research Competition. You don’t need to pay to submit an abstract. Follow the additional steps described below to submit to the Tulane OGH Research Competition.

Students wishing to enter the Tulane Office of Global Health (OGH) Research Competition must first submit their abstract for the CUGH 2021 Virtual Conference on or before the October 23, 2020 deadline.

To prepare to submit your abstract to CUGH, download and review the FAQs Sheet to determine the correct pathway for your abstract (Scientific Abstract v. Program & Project Abstract v. Global Health Education Abstract), and for the required information for each abstract type. Abstracts that are submitted to the wrong pathway, or that do not include the required information, risk lower review scores and higher probability of being rejected for presentation.

All accepted abstracts will be UNMODERATED ELECTRONIC POSTERS, as this conference will be fully virtual. The highest scoring ePosters will be published in a special CUGH Edition of The Lancet Global Health.

To enter the Tulane OGH Research Competition, a copy of the submitted abstract must be sent to Ms. Andrea Meyer (ameyer1@tulane.edu) by October 23. Submissions should include an email subject line that reads “Abstract Submitted for the Tulane OGH Research Competition,” and should include the following information:

1. Name of submitting student

4. Names of all Tulane students listed as authors on the abstract

Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.

Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by at least two Tulane faculty members serving on the review panel for the Office of Global Health. Reviewers will score each abstract on a 1-5 scale based on the following criteria:

  1. Originality
  2. Relevance to global health
